The
Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates people about
disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains
them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search
and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using the
training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can
assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when
professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT
members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by
taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their
community. [More about CERT ...]
• Assist the members of our communities and workplaces following an event when professional responders (law enforcement, fire, and EMS) are not immediately available to help.
• Be always prepared to assist those professional responders in every area for which we have been properly trained.
• Support emergency response agencies by taking an active role in emergency preparedness projects in our communities.
• Assist in and support the mission of MOVHD to protect the general public from the growing specter of acts of terrorism and new emerging diseases through planning, detection, communication, response, public information, and training.

![]() MOVHD Service Area |
Because of the significant level of interest being shown toward the CERT concept, Mid-Ohio Valley Regional (MOVR) CERT is now in the process of expanding to include all six counties in the MOVHD Service Area (shown on the map at right). The original members of MOVR CERT who live in Wood County have become the Wood County Chapter of MOVR CERT. In 2011 chapters were established in Wirt and Ritchie Counties, and additional Chapters are being established in Roane, Pleasants, and Calhoun Counties before the end of this year.
Although all of these Chapters are still part of Mid-Ohio Valley Regional CERT, each county Chapter has its own Chapter Coordinator and other officers, as well as its own activities, but will be prepared to respond anywhere within the MOVR CERT service area they may be needed.
You may take the free training at any location where it is offered. Once you have completed your training, unless you specifically request otherwise, you will automatically be affiliated with the Chapter in your home county, or with the Chapter of the county nearest you if you don’t live in one of these six counties. Of course, you may request to be affiliated with any Chapter you prefer, and you may be affiliated with more than one Chapter (though only one Chapter will be your “primary” or “home” Chapter). [For example, your humble webmaster is a member of both the Wood County Chapter of MOVR CERT and Tyler County CERT, but Wood County Chapter is his “home” Chapter.]
Individuals with special needs are encouraged to actively participate in the MOVR CERT program and will be assigned duties consistent with their abilities and training.

• In a disaster, it may be 72 hours or longer before first responders (law enforcement, fire fighters, EMTs, or paramedics) can get to you!
• Only 57% of people report that they have readiness items set aside in their homes for use in disaster.
• Just 34% of people have readiness supplies in their car.
• Less than half of households have an Emergency Plan
and yet …
• 42% of individuals report that they would need help during a disaster.
